How Citius Oncology Used Norstella’s RWD Solutions to Fuel Commercial Triggers and Focus Field Engagement

For Citius Oncology, launching the drug Lymphir meant understanding where patients with cutaneous T-cell lymphoma (CTCL), a rare type of skin cancer, were receiving care, and helping its field team prioritize relevant providers and accounts.

Citius partnered with Norstella to combine insights from integrated real-world data with a commercial triggers program. The ultimate solution provided timely, provider-focused alerts based on documented patient clinical and treatment signals, helping the field team focus its engagement where those signals indicated a relevant opportunity.

Through the partnership, Citius:

  • Identified a larger role for community care than historical launch assumptions suggested, directly informing its account targeting and field deployment strategy
  • Used data-driven insights to inform sales force deployment and prioritize provider and account engagement

Challenge

In a rare disease, small and dispersed patient populations make it difficult to determine where to focus commercial resources. Citius needed a current view of the CTCL treatment landscape to support the Lymphir launch, including which providers and accounts were treating patients and how treatment patterns varied across care settings.

“The challenge has always been finding where these patients are coming from, what the patient journey looks like in academic centers, and how many academic centers are actually treating patients with certain medications,” said Chad LaChapelle, National Sales Director at Citius Oncology.

The last CTCL drug launch had occurred eight years earlier. Historical assumptions about the concentration of patients in academic centers could no longer provide a sufficient basis for sizing and deploying the field team. Citius needed to understand the role of community settings as well.

As LaChapelle explained, obtaining accurate patient counts is difficult, and developing that understanding manually could take years. For a company launching a new therapy, the challenge was turning a fragmented view of patient care into actionable priorities for the field.

Solution

Citius turned to Norstella’s integrated NorstellaLinQ real-world data capabilities, including linked open and closed claims, electronic health records (EHR), and unstructured clinical notes, to better understand where CTCL patients were being diagnosed and treated.

The partnership supported two connected needs: informing the broader commercial strategy and helping the field team prioritize ongoing engagement.

Working with Norstella helped Citius understand the treatment landscape. Citius described the earlier launch landscape as approximately 75% academic and 25% community care. The current claims analysis showed a more balanced distribution, with some views in early stage patients indicating approximately 60% community and 40% academic care.

That finding broadened Citius’s commercial focus. Community accounts represented a substantial part of the CTCL treatment landscape and needed to be reflected in how the company structured and deployed its sales force.

Norstella’s real-world data enabled a commercial triggers program that was first clinically-validated, then created clinical and treatment signals into alerts associated with relevant providers and accounts. These alerts helped Citius’s field team prioritize outreach and focus its account engagement.

The program connected the broader market picture with more timely signals about where to act. For Citius, data timeliness was essential to making those insights useful during launch.

Outcome

Early results have provided a concrete indication of the program’s commercial value to the company.

LaChapelle also emphasized the importance of data quality, responsiveness, and support. Without an in-house data analytics team, Citius relied on Norstella as an extension of its own team.

“If you don’t have a partner that has accurate data, then all of this falls apart,” LaChapelle said. “If you don’t have timely data, the patient opportunity is gone. Norstella has consistently shown me they can do both, and do it well.”

Citius renewed its partnership with Norstella, citing the strength of the working relationship.

“It’s the partnership – it’s the people you work with,” LaChapelle said.

For LaChapelle, the program’s value is closely tied to the treatment starts Citius attributes to it. “If you find three patients with this, it pays for the whole data program,” said LaChapelle. “If I could find one patient per month using this data, then it’s a home run for me. It’s just going to get better – as KAMs gain more access to these accounts, then ROI will continue to increase.”

Citius is exploring additional AI-enabled capabilities to better understand patterns in clinical notes. The next phase would build on its existing program by adding context around treatment decisions and potential barriers to initiation.

For rare diseases, clinical notes can provide context beyond structured records, helping teams explore why expected treatment starts may not be occurring at particular accounts. Citius sees an opportunity to use that deeper understanding to further inform its commercial strategy and account engagement.

Frequently asked questions

Everything You Need to Know

How can real-world data support pharmaceutical commercial strategy?

Real-world data helps pharmaceutical companies understand patient populations, treatment patterns, care settings and provider activity. These insights can inform launch planning, account targeting and field engagement strategies.

How did Citius Oncology use NorstellaLinQ during the Lymphir launch?

Citius Oncology used NorstellaLinQ’s linked claims, EHR data and unstructured clinical notes to better understand where CTCL patients were receiving care. Norstella also supported a commercial triggers program that delivered provider-focused alerts based on clinical and treatment signals.

What did real-world data reveal about CTCL treatment settings?

Citius described historical assumptions suggesting approximately 75% academic and 25% community care. The current analysis revealed a more balanced landscape, with some early-stage patient views indicating approximately 60% community and 40% academic care. This helped the company broaden its commercial focus beyond academic centers.

What are commercial triggers in pharmaceutical sales?

Commercial triggers are alerts based on relevant clinical or treatment signals that help pharmaceutical field teams identify providers and accounts that may warrant engagement. In this case, Norstella’s clinically validated program used these signals to support more timely, focused outreach.

How can RWD improve pharmaceutical field force deployment?

RWD can help companies identify where relevant patients are receiving care and which accounts may represent commercial opportunities. Citius used these insights to inform its sales force deployment strategy and prioritize provider and account engagement.
